“Hey come check this out.” That’s what Ken said to me when he found the video. There was a YouTuber interviewing an expat in Da Nang, Vietnam. This guy was a veteran who couldn’t afford life in the US on his tiny income. But in Da Nang? He could not only survive, but truly live – AND save. His total monthly budget was around $1600 – and that included rent (for a very nice apartment), food (eating out 3x every day), all his bills, and walking around money. What?? That’s insane. Obviously an exaggeration. Right??
But it wasn’t. The more research we did, the more videos we watched, the more clear it became that this was real.
I asked the kids, “Hey, hypothetically, how would you two feel about moving to Vietnam one day?”
Harry: “Oh hell yes!”
Skipper: “Uhhhhhh….”
Me: “You know how much you like Pho? Did you know Pho is Vietnamese?”
Skipper: “I’M IN.”
We thought Vietnam might be a great way to spend retirement one day.
