I’ve been avoiding writing this one.
Harry moved out. I’m incredibly proud of him – moving out at 19 is hard these days – so much harder than it was when I was that age. But he’s making it happen anyway. I’m also finding it a little bittersweet. I knew he wasn’t coming with us when we leave the country, but I guess part of me always hoped he would change his mind. Now, he’s signed a one-year lease and it’s real.
He moved in with two of his friends… and his girlfriend, Skye. That’s another big OMG for Mom. My son moved in with his girlfriend. I was worried at first – they haven’t been dating very long, and I worry that they are jumping in too soon. But she’s the sweetest and I really like her.
She and I went out to coffee to get to know each other, and we ended up talking for 2 hours. Skye is a sweet kid and she seems to have been through quite a bit. We actually had a lot more in common than I expected.
While I’m still worried about how Harry will be after we move, I do feel a little better now. His other roommates are his guy-buddies. And while I know that they care about him, they’re guys. And young. And I worry that they might not notice very quickly if anything happens or he becomes depressed. But Skye will. That definitely helps my mama heart to know that if anything happens to Harry, there is someone who cares about him and will notice right away if something isn’t right. I feel a little relieved knowing that I’m not leaving him totally alone.
Skye, if you’re reading this, thank you. For being there. For caring about Harry. I know you’ll make sure he’s okay while we’re gone.
